Hybrid sociocultural spaces are places that combine different activities, identities, and functions, creating dynamic and flexible environments. They’re characterized by a mix of activities, communities, and audiences, encouraging cross-pollination and new ideas.

These spaces often come to life through the transformation of existing sites, such as former factories or abandoned buildings, and might include coworking spaces, event halls, studios, or cafés among many.

These spaces bring a crossover of fresh content, welcome a range of people and uses, introduce new cultural formats and moments of gathering, and strive to combine innovation with social inclusion.

History

Hybrid sociocultural spaces emerge in 2020 from an informal network of Milan-based cultural organizations and hybrid sociocultural spaces.

The aim was to map and better understand the diversity of self-managed services, which are part of a collaborative welfare system within a 15-minute city, and highlight the challenges they face in managing these spaces, which often clash with outdated and rigid regulations that fail to support change.

In April 2021, the network presented to the City of Milan and its citizens a document titled "The Hybrid Spaces of Milan: 1 Manifesto, 1 Questionnaire, 1 Map for the 15-Minute City".
